Malaysia - Where Computing is Cool for Girls!!!

Rapeepat Jumnongjit wrote:

In Malaysia an education in computing is popular with girls and computing is considered a suitable career for women. In Norway, however only few girls choose computing as major subject. It is often said that a girl at a computer is like a fish out of water. The question that is often asked is: Is it the girls or the subject that there’s something wrong within the problem which must be addressed?, and must be changed? This has, at times become quite a politicised debate, Lagesen points out.

didn’t know this…I thought it’s still quite a male-dominated scene?

So-Called Shortage: Joke?

via the Sun:

PENANG (Jan 8, 2007): Did someone recently say there was a shortage of teachers in schools? Is this really the case?

For Joshua Hooi, 24, who graduated with an education degree, majoring in Maths and minoring in Chemistry last August from Universiti Sains Malaysia, the so-called shortage is a joke, but he isn’t laughing.

Entering into a four-year bond with the government after completing his degree on a government scholarship, he is eager to serve, but has yet to receive news of his posting from the education department.

“The education department must have acquired secret training from the fire services department as they seem to operate under the same modus operandi. They go to work only after there is a fire.

“I wonder if anyone had foreseen that it was only a matter of time before saturation point is reached, considering the constant mass production of education graduates. “Did anyone think about making statistical checks to meet the supply of teachers with the demand for them?

I understand his frustration but to criticise another civil service (in this case the fire services) isn’t really the right way to voice out….IMHO

Iban Language to be New SPM Subject

The Star Online reported:

As of June this year, 9,372 students from Form One to Form Three studied Bahasa Iban in 55 schools, with 165 teachers available.

For Form Four next year, it is estimated that 1,440 students will take the subject in 48 schools under 144 teachers.

Malaysia Students blog wrote:

I urge all non-Malay students to take the respective native languages as a subject and sit for its examination, be it in PMR or SPM. If we do not speak and preserve our own native languages, who should we hope for doing so?

Malaysia: Gulf States’ Medical & Education Destination

via Khaleej Times:

DUBAI — Residents of the Gulf States are increasingly travelling to Malaysia for medical care, according to spokespersons at Kuala Lumpur’s National Health Institute (Institut Jantung Negara). “More and more patients are coming from the UAE and the Gulf,” said front officer manager, Ruzana Abdul Samad.

The main reason for the surge in demand is that the cost of treatment in Malaysia can be up to one third cheaper than in the Gulf, and patients often go on holiday afterwards, she said.

Something positive for once =)
