Malaysia Wisdom: Another use of Tiger Balm

Mommakeller wrote:

My friend, the school nurse at ISKL, was working in her office one day when a Malay girl came in and said she needed Tiger Balm. Linda asked her what she needed it for and the girl said she was fasting (it’s Ramadan) and was so hungry and if you rub Tiger Balm on your stomach it takes the hunger pains away. Linda told her that that is not a listed use for Tiger Balm, but if it helps rub away!

cool, didn’t know that…would minyak kapak (axe oil) work as well?

Asia’s cancer rates to spike by 2020

via AP:

The number of cancer cases in Asia is set to rise dramatically by 2020 due largely to longer life spans and changing lifestyles, threatening a health crisis as poorer countries in the region struggle to afford care.

A fast-growing population coupled with people living longer and undergoing extreme changes to diet and lifestyle will place a major burden on developing countries that cannot afford screening, vaccines and expensive treatment, experts said at the start of a two-day conference in Singapore.

Just 19.9 Minutes…6th Quickest!

via NST:

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians spend an average of 19.9 minutes when they make love.
Hardly the stuff romance novels are made of, they ranked sixth quickest in the world in terms of time spent in a love-making session.

However, if it’s any consolation, the average time spent is above the global average of 18.3 minutes.

India’s lovers were the world’s quickest, spending only 13.2 minutes per session.

Nigeria once again topped the ranking on a leisurely 23 minutes.
Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and Australia were all well below the world average time.

haha…at least we beat 2 of our neighbours =)

Bittergourd: Weapon against Diabetes!

[pic source]

via NST:

KUALA LUMPUR: It takes some bitterness to fight the nemesis of those who have a sweet tooth. And as it turns out, using bittergourd to fight diabetes is not an old wives’ tale after all.

With the ever-growing numbers of diabetics, many pharmaceutical companies are looking for alternative cures, and they have discovered that bittergourd works to control blood sugar levels.

It has been used as an Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes for centuries.

CCM Duopharma Berhad, a Chemical Company of Malaysia (CCM) subsidiary, has developed bittergourd capsules which can be used as a preventive measure to help keep diabetes at bay.

This could indirectly help to lower the number of patients with the disease.

Light through the haze

via Straits Times:

Untypical candour shown by the Environment Minister, Mr Rachmat Witoelar, will encourage hope that Indonesia is beginning to be seriously focused on tackling the pollution after the stern Asean-level intervention of three months ago. Mr Witoelar discussed coping measures before the Jakarta foreign correspondents club this week, thereby guaranteeing publicity for an issue which this year generated more dissatisfaction than usual in Singapore and Malaysia.

Not only that, he did the remarkable thing of asking Indonesia’s neighbours for two years’ forbearance before they could expect to see improvement. Was this chutzpah or realism?

There would be disagreement over whether the people of Southeast Asia would care to endure even another season of the choking carbon and methane clouds, or if he was being realistic talking of cleaning up the environmental degradation in a short period of time. By his admission, the problem had developed unchecked in Indonesia over 30 years.

At least something’s being done…and let’s hope they’ll be some results. Seriously I don’t even mind paying like RM50-100 every year to help the cause if they really need the money.
