Bride or Prejudice?

The Star today picked up on the story about the novel ‘buy-on-the-spot’ coffee shop parade of Vietnames Bride service available now to Malaysian men. I am always puzzled by our homegrown “creativity” in vices (top dvd pirates, top credit card cloners) yet hardly making a mark in the world for other reasons.

My personal views in relation to this growing trend - is that there are perhaps 4 general socio-economic forces at work - 2 economic and 2 sociological:

…another possible reason for the growing trend to marry rural brides is the growing career-driveness of women. I am not saying that it is a bad thing to be career-minded and to be financially independent. Women focused on having a career will generally want to be married later and when they are prepared to settle down, they are already in their 30s. And successful career women have a partner wish list that may not be realistic. They want men who are more successful then them. Even if there were, these men would either be married already or would have a strong apprehension to marry someone so similar - opposites do attract. The women would say that the men are just threatened and they wont choose an insecure man. Truth is there are very few secure men who would choose a driven woman.
